Beef patties smothered with mushroom gravy, they’re an easy and delicious midweek meal
Mom used to make beef patties with mushroom gravy and it was always a family favourite. You know how everybody has a famous food? Kinda like my famous pizza, or your famous meatballs? Well these should be Ferns famous beef patties. Simply put, they’re pretty much just hand pressed hamburger patties smothered in a mushroom gravy. But man, they are delicious. Beef with mushrooms? We all know those flavours are a perfect match. Add onions to the mix and a side of mashed potatoes and you’ve got yourself an easy economical dinner.
What do I need?
- 1 egg (beaten)
- 1 cooking onion
- 2 tbsp of dry bread crumbs
- ¾ tsp of oregano
- ½ tsp of salt
- ½ tsp of pepper
- 3 cloves of garlic (minced)
- 1 lb of lean ground beef
- 1 tbsp of vegetable oil
- 2 cups of sliced mushrooms
- 2 tbsp of all purpose flour
- 1½ cups of beef stock
- ½ tsp of Worcestershire sauce
- 2 tsp of parsley
Forming the Patties
Making the beef patties is similar to forming hamburgers but in this case you’re going to add minced garlic, grated or minced onion, oregano, salt, pepper and beaten egg to the ground beef. Simply mix it all together and divide it into 8 meat patties.
Use a cast iron skillet for added flavour
For added flavour and delicious bark on the meat patties, I like to use our cast iron skillet. Just preheat the pan with a bit of canola oil until it’s starting to smoke. Drop in the patties but don’t overcrowd and don’t fiddle with them. About 5 minutes a side should do. Check the internal temperature through the side of the patties. It should be 160℉. When the patties are cooked you can sear the mushrooms in some of the beef drippings. You can’t do that if you’re using your barbecue. By all means, grill them, but in this case it’s almost more work. A cast iron skillet is a valuable tool to have tucked away with your pots and pans. So what’s stopping you from dusting it off, lightly oiling it and putting it into action.

Isn’t this just Salisbury steak?
So if you feel like a burger and don’t want the bread that comes along with it, this recipe might just be worth trying. Technically I guess you could call it Salisbury steak. Mom always called it meat patties with gravy, so we’re gonna stick with that.
